335. DisneySea - Maple Churros

Maple Churros @Yen250 (~SGD3.90)

The saying goes curiousity kills the cat, I said curiousity makes a foodie poorer. Take a look around when you visit DisneySea. Many will be holding this stick called maple churros. It tasted like buttery pastry dipped in maple syrup, coated with a coat of sugar. It smelled great but I don't think it makes a good snack during the cold winter.

278. Daiso's grabs

I think this candy is quite unique in the sense that it has a mild content of saltiness. Yes, salt content in a candy. The brown sugar innards has salt mixed in it. And probably because of the salt, I felt the candy is not very sweet. My Chinese physician told me brown sugar is better than the normal refined white sugar, raw and cane sugar. Then again, even brown sugar is categorized in different grades. So, what to expect from a pack of sweets for $2?

Rice crackers. Not Wang Wang brand. It is much smaller than Wang Wang's. I felt it is more flavoured than Wang Wang's. With the weather killing almost all creatures on Earth, I think these rice crackers worked best with a superb chilled mug of beer.

I loved shopping at Daiso. The Japanese stuffs are so kawaii! But, I don't know why, I didn't manage to shop the entire daiso everytime. I supposed there are too many things to see, that's why I usually made my way to the cashier after browsing through the food and utensils corner. Though everything is priced at $2 each, some of the items are definitely overpriced.

273. Lotte Choco Pie

Lotte Choco Pie. It made me remember this scene whereby Kim Sam Soon (Korean actress - Kim Sun Ah) went climbing the Halla mountain on her birthday and she mentioned choco pie is the best to fight hunger. This was one of my favourite munchies when I was residing in Shanghai. The cold long winter, choco pies made a good companion. Ah...hot chocolate to go along would be heavenly but definitely not in Singapore with temperatures hitting a peak of 34.

I wouldn't say Lotte's has the best but it is the one of the better ones I have tasted so far.

Pie is coated with a thin layer of chocolate and a layer of marshmallow sandwiched in between. The choco pie is spongy. It is a not-so-sinful choco pie. NTUC Fairprice is selling a box of 6's for $2.40.

267. Japanese Titbits

What to get from Japan? I searched online and surprisingly I couldn't find any relating to food. Mostly were on getting Burberry blue label goods. Shouldn't there be at least some information for tourists on what to get whilst in Japan? Or was my searching skills too bad?

A few days ago, it was advertised on papers that tourists visiting Singapore could get the following (to state a few) as souvenirs.

1. Barbequed pork

2. Bengawan Solo's pandan cake

3. Ready-made laksa, chili, chicken rice paste

and etc....

"No Laudree. No Pierre Herme.", Bro said. He is not going to bring back any of those dainty macarons, isaphans for me. "Awww..."

Just the commoner's pick. In Singapore, we could only get kit kat original. In Hong Kong, we could get kit kat filled with mint or orange, exterior is still of chocolate coat. In Japan, we could get kit kat coated with matcha and the interior is also filled with matcha. I loved the matcha kit kat more than the chocolate kit kat. Yummy....

More candies. Chelsea sweets. I think we could get this brand in Singapore. Not too sure about the peach flavour. The yogurt flavour which comes in green colour package is also nice. Ah.....soda gum. I wanted cidar sweets but bro didn't manage to get it. He got soda gum instead. And it's super soda gum, centre-filled with a tad more soda content (in powder form).

40 yen (app SGD 0.64) a bottle. So kawaii~ The height is half of what we have got here.

Satsukuri Toufu Kuranchi (Toufu crunchy). There are 10 packs in a canister, cost about 500 yen (app SGD 8). 豆太-san, the bean illustrated on the cover, is so kawaii! Tofu, the main ingredient,is mixed with black sesame seeds, concentrated milk and etc. It has a texture like the yogurt bar- chewy. It is ideal as a gift.

Well, we could get mochi as well but I personally felt the mochi was nothing special, just that they were very nicely wrapped. And maybe Imoyokan, the Japanese jelly made from sweet potatoes? At least it's something that we could only get in Japan. I wonder how's the taste like?

166. Sunview Raisins

Here I got another canister of Sunview's raisins, the black seedless. Woot! The raisins were jumbo sized. Bought this canister for $6.50. Even though they stated it was seedless, I still find tiny seeds in the raisins. The raisins were juicy. It was much more enjoyable to munch on these big raisins!

161. Japanese Pocky

Went to the kiosk to fill up petrol for my car and also get some tidbits to eat. Saw these two flavours so I got one each. There wasn't any pricing on the shelf so I just took them and only to realise the exorbitant prices after payment.

The strawberry flavoured cost $4.80 and the mikan (orange) flavoured cost $3.80. I almost fainted. They are different from the usual pocky we could easily buy from supermarkets. They are imported from Japan. The Japanese tidbits are so expensive.

I was wondering why the strawberry flavoured pocky cost more than the mikan flavoured. See the words on the package? The strawberry flavoured pocky has had strawberry fruit bits in the strawberry coat whereas the mikan flavoured pocky used mikan juice.

What differentiates them from the normal pocky? 1 of the reasons I liked Japanese tidbits is their cute packaging. kawaii desu~ The pocky sticks were packed in 5's into 4 packs.

The other reason is because they tasted different. Not just a normal chocolate or strawberry coat over the biscuit stick.

The mikan flavoured pocky smelled great. An orangy smell. It was a thick mikan coat on the stick. If you have a bite of them, you will know the difference between the normal pocky and the imported pocky. It's the quality. Frankly speaking, if we are those tidbits munchers and a fan of Japanese tidbits, I can imagine how much will eating tidbits cost. It will cost a few times more than a normal hawker meal. Haha.

128. Philippines Banana Chips

A neighbour of mine went Philippines and got my family this banana chips, some mangoes and dried mangoes. The banana chips were crispy like what they had stated on the exterior of their package. It wasn't too sweet probably because they used cane sugar nor were they too oily.

123. Sunview Organically Grown Raisins

15oz (425g) for $6.50

Are you a fan of raisins? Then you may want to put your Sun Maid raisin aside and try this Sunview organically grown raisins! Sunview is from California. When it comes to raisins, it seems like Sun Maid becomes the most easily available choice.

1 difference I have noticed between Sunview and Sun Maid was on Sun Maid raisins, you will see a whitish layer on the skin of the raisins. I guess it could be due to the remains of synthetic pesticides? Not too sure about it. But look at those of Sunview's. It's clean. Organically grown. They are definitely the more tantalizing raisins to munch on.

What's more, Sunview's raisins are in jumbo size. Wow....they ain't any least bit inferior to the big raisins I have bought from Japan.

Sunview raisins should be available in all big supermarkets.
