215. Mei Heong Yuen Dessert

Never heard of Mei Heong Yuen? Never mind. How about the Farmer brand peanuts? The packet of peanuts that always appear on Chinese New Year. Yes, Mei Heong Yuen is owned by the boss of Farmer brand peanuts. This explains why their peanut paste was so good, though other desserts were also as good.
Geez...it is always crowded at Mei Heong Yuen if you go during the weekends. Even after expanded to twice the size it was originally, there was still the long queue. I gave thumbs-up to their desserts, especially the hot ones. My take is the almond paste. It was of the right density, not too watery nor bland. Their almond paste exudes a almond fragrance, not those which smelt like artificially made almond paste. It is $2.50 per bowl, much more expensive compared to the $1.20 a bowl at the Chinatown hawker centre. But if you have tasted them before, it was an obvious difference in quality.

Steamed Carrot Cakes
Steamed Pumpkin Cakes
The steamed carrot and pumpkin cakes were not much difference in taste. The only difference was the later had pumpkin added. Frankly speaking, I felt the taste of the pumpkin was quite mild. Their steamed cakes were soft but not goggy. And if you were to take a closer look, you would have realised their cakes were slightly oily. I bet pork lard was added to make it to such. And also for the fragrance. Mushrooms and dried shrimps were also added. I think the roasted sesame seeds made the cakes more fragrant. I'm a 'less-salt' person. I personally felt it was slightly salty. But overall, I felt the cakes were good though not really a healthy take.
Water Chestnut Paste

Cooling dessert. It was chilled. Finely diced chestnuts, sweet corn and the beautiful egg strips created the water chestnut paste. It was smooth and not too starchy.

Mango Shaved Ice @$4

I have no idea when the shaved ice was introduced as I have not been to MHY for quite some time. There was almost 1 bowl of this mango shaved ice on every one of the tables when I was there. Mango is a favourite fruit among Singaporeans. There are other flavours too, such as matcha with red beans, chocolate with rainbow rice chips and etc. It was a simple dessert. All they have to do was shave the made-ready mango ice, surround the bowl with fresh mango fruits and drizzled a bit of the mango syrup on top of the ice......jajang.....$4 please. I felt it was a tad expensive for the ice.
I did not take note how much does the steamed cakes cost. Total bill was $11.90.

  2. Mei Heong Yuen... the peanuts sound familiar, is it near Chinatown? If so, their 芝麻糊 and 鸳鸯 are good too...

The shaved ice of the Mango Shaved Ice looks similar to the one from Slice (http://slice.sg/)... Finely shaved flavoured ice...
