358. Jakarta - The Cream & Fudge Factory

We were at Grand Indonesia, one of the big shopping malls in Jakarta. The highest levels, level 4 and 5, house the food restaurants. The interior decoration made me feel as if I was in Genting with the palace like lightings, indoor amusement park and tiled flooring. We chose The Cream & Fudge Factory over Haagen Daz, Gelatissimo and others which could be found in Singapore.
Green Apple topped with M&N chocolate @RP 30000 (SGD 4.60)

The green apple taste wasn't very evident. The milk powder taste was stronger. The ice cream texture was a tad too chewy i thought. If it is what the name suggested, then I think it fit perfectly.

Strawberry Shortcake double scoop @RP58000 (SGD 8.90)
Strawberry shortcake was mixed into the vanilla ice cream and topped with strawberry fudge. Too sweet. With the addition of the strawberry shortcake and the chewiness of the ice cream, somehow, I felt the ice cream don't taste cold at all. I didn't like it as much as Haagen Daz. I was attracted to the waffle bowl instead. Similarly, it was with a tad of chewiness but would work perfectly fine with any ice cream, I felt.

339. Once Upon a Milkshake

3 scoops @$7.20

We had the mocha, rum&raisin and cookies&cream. Hidden at the back of The White House at Tanjong Pagar, it was not at all unfamiliar to the working population at Tanjong Pagar. The obvious sexy purple borders accompanied the see-through window panes. It's very much you-see-what-you-get as much as the name suggested. Milkshakes and then.....there was ice-cream.

Frankly speaking, I wouldn't say the ice-cream was the mama-mia kind. But others said the milkshake was good. I have not tried it so I hold my views on that.

290. U.d.d.e.r.s Ice-cream

IMG_9983-1(edited)
U.d.d.e.r.s has opened two more outlets and they are closer to my home. One is at Lorong Kilat and the other at West Mall. I went to the one at West Mall, hoping that the crowd will be smaller. It was not. There were so many people, it was like there's an ice-cream sale. New outlets appeal to the mass and I wondered is this going to last?
IMG_9981-1(edited)
Strawberry Fields @$3.20/scoop
This name completely fits the ice-cream. Miss fields showed us her pits. Yes, it's made from the strawberry fruit. It really tasted like picked from the fields. Eh....what were the strawberries doing on the fields? I think it's very seldom we get strawberries which are very sweet and thus Miss fields here is not getting the wink from me. But she is one of the best-sellers. I think her fans see her as a natural beauty.
IMG_9979-1(edited)
Tira-mis-u (Premium) + Bailey's & Bourbon (Connoisseur) @$7.20
My friends called me an alcoholic. I'm no hardcore drinker, just occasionally a drink or two now. 2 years ago, when I was residing overseas, I drink Choya everyday, to fight the cold winters. But Choya has a low alcohol content, so that doesn't make me an alcoholic. It's good for health and beauty, er...I suppose. I'm a fan of food made from Bailey's. I personally felt drinking Bailey's seems like something is lacking but it's a different feel when it is used to make into another product, like Bailey's chocolates, ice-cream or used on tea cakes.
The classic Italian dessert turned ice-cream. I felt it could be made a tad richer. The Bailey's & Bourbon was good. U.d.d.e.r.s's ice-cream is smooth and has a natural taste. Their ice-cream is not sweet but I liked it. Healthy ice-cream. Yes, I can eat more. I'll most probably try their Choya ice-cream the next time.

269. Frutta La Viva II

The night falls. I need to fight the 'ultimate' weather with something cold. This was our second encounter. The first was at the food fair. Ah...so it was at the far end of Sun Court and I didn't know that building is Sun Court until my friend said so. To think I said the West is my 'territory'. We were the only patrons though it was the 'dessert-time'.
A glance across....rock melon caught my eyes.
Melone (Rock Melon), Frutti Di Bosco (Mix of Strawberry/Blueberry/Raspberry)

Gelato @$3.20 a scoop. The gelato was dense and of natural sweetness. Tiny bits of melon fruits in the melone gave the gelato a texture. It was a relief that the frutti di bosco wasn't of the ultimate sourness. Do not underestimate the combined 'power' of berries. Just a tinge of sourness that was smooth to the throat.

258. Island Creamery

Nutella @$2.80 a scoop

After a satisfying Japanese meal at Yoshoku Kitchen next door, I headed to Island Creamery. Simple decorations but a cosy place. The walls were filled with photos of the ice-cream lovers. It was a weekday afternoon and the place was filled with students. It's a place for students who don't head home after school without getting a scoop of their ice-cream. A glance at their ice-cream, I noticed Island Creamery is not just a place for normal ice-cream. They sell weird flavours. A few of which I noticed were Teh-tarik, bandung and etc. I bought nutella. Hey, nutella don't just work on bread! It was like vanilla with swirls of nutella in it. The ice-cream was very rich and there was a strong milk taste. For handmade ice-cream, I gave a thumbs-up.

216. Häagen-Dazs

Mango and Passion Fruit @$11.95

Häagen-Dazs ice-cream has a rich flavour, thick texture and a melt-in-the-mouth pleasure. I got one of the limited editions, mango and passion fruit. The lady told me it was like sorbet. The first thought that came into my mind was Häagen-Dazs's ice-cream can't be like sorbet due to its thick texture. Anyway, I was attracted to the passion fruit because it would have taste sour, very different from Häagen-Dazs's usual make. I was right. Mango formed the majority and concentrated passion fruit was the swirl in the ice-cream. Overall, it wasn't too sour.
It was definitely not like sorbet but still was nice. I felt if Häagen-Dazs really made it like sorbet, it would be nicer. I personally felt sorbet was a more refreshing choice compared to ice-cream, like eating flavoured fine ice. Usually ice-cream with thick texture would not be so soothing to the tastebuds. You would have want a cup of water to cleanse your palate.
I bought the belgian chocolate flavour as well but has yet to try it. Will blog it soon......

171. Frutta La Viva

Food Safari Fair was held in conjunction with the Home Electrics Fair at Suntec City Convention Hall from today 14 Nov 2008 -16 Nov 2008. Though not as many booths as the food fair held over at expo hall concurrently, there were still quite a number of food stalls on exhibition but maybe having too many to choose from, I wasn't so keen on trying them out. Also, it was near dinner time, I chose to leave my stomach for a proper meal.

Side-tracked a bit. I was attracted to the pink checkered sarong-alike cloth draped over the African exhibitors' shoulders. They were selling African accessories at one booth and the other, they were selling the African chapati. Pretty much similar to the Turkish kebab. A wrap up with fillings.

2 weeks ago, I was planning to pay Frutta La Viva a visit since it is located pretty near my place but didn't in the end due to some work. I saw their booth on exhibition and decided to get a scoop.

Frutta La Viva - The ultimate gelato made fresh for you everyday. This was as advertised on their flyer.
Bacio @$3.20 per scoop

From the friendly uncle's recommendation (I supposed the boss), I got to know that the Bacio and the durian flavour are the best sellers. He mentioned it was made with D24 durian. I wasn't too keen on durian so I chose the chocolate.
And indeed it was delicious. It had chocolate chips and a variety of nuts in it. Not sure how many types of nuts there are. But it gave the gelato a very nutty and crunchy texture. It was like the nuts were just roasted. It wasn't very chocolaty. So, I felt the combination was great! At least to me, I felt their tagline did prove them right. Their gelato (bacio flavour, which I had) was fresh.

169. Orignal Mix

Original Mix, your gelato playhouse - shown on their signboard. Many flavours were available but only the different caught my eye, lychee sorbet.
The lychee sorbet was very nice. The sorbet was smooth and melted instantly the moment it was into my mouth. It had small lychee bits in the sorbet which added texture to the sorbet.

154. Scoopz

It has been at the basement of Jurong Point for quite some time but I have never bought a scoop from it before. I happened to pass by so I decided to join the queue to get a scoop.
They have quite a range to choose from. Some flavours I have never seen before. The brown beer flavour.
Frankly speaking, the ice-cream didn't look very appetizing to me. It's like pure ice-cream even though they stated more real fruits. I couldn't really see the fruits in the ice-cream. Not like other ice-cream or gelato, their ice-cream is like full of nuts, fruits and etc.....so tempting.

Then again, Scoopz is a healthier choice of ice-cream over the Haagen Daaz, B&J and etc which are fattening.

Mint & Cookies Flavour @$2.70/scoop
Indeed the ice-cream was really less sugar because it wasn't sweet at all. A mild mint flavour but with generous amount of cookies in it. There were chocolate chips in the ice-cream too.
Next time, I shall try the brown beer. Is it really beer?

149. Seventh Heaven

Gan Eng Seng Secondary School used to stand on the land where the Marketing Institute of Singapore is now. Raeburn Park, behind the Tanjong Pagar railway station, was like a ghost town even though it was just 9pm and the night classes were still going on.
Hidden in the middle of the campus, their cafe's name was printed faintly on the glasses. It was until I flipped the menu outside the door then we knew it was Seventh Heaven.
My makan kaki and I took "great pains" to reach this place. We walked all the way from Raffles Place. Later, we heard from the lady (I suppose 1 of the partners) that they even have customers who walked all the way from Marine Parade. Woo...so we weren't the worst. Haha. Alright, we took it as a stroll to let our stomach digest the food from dinner and shift out some space for their so much raved ice-cream.

In their menu, they mentioned that their ice-cream was all hand-made with good quality ingredients and thus pricier. Whether they were telling the truth, let their ice-cream proved it. The lady told me that they will be changing their menu next week, adding in more new flavours.
There weren't any customers when we reached there. The environment was very quiet. I liked the bar top chairs.

We ordered the Irish Cream Liqueur and Chocolate and Whisky. 2 scoops @$9.20 (w/o GST)

Their vanilla was darn good. Very rich and aromatic. A very pleasing taste. You could see that their vanilla was made from vanilla pods and not made using vanilla essence.

The Chocolate and Whisky was heavier in taste. But it was very nice too, a great combination. I think chocolate lovers will like it.
I felt having ice-cream at Seventh Heaven was a real indulgence. Not just the price but the taste. And because the ice-cream was so palatable, you wouldn't mind paying more. Haha.

140. Ben & Jerry mini tubs

3 mini tubs @$12.90

chocolate fudge brownie

Triple the ripples! Ben & Jerry now comes in mini tubs. This is definitely a good news for their ice-cream lovers. Before they introduced the minis, their ice-cream were in a slightly bigger tub which cost $13.90. I would have hesitate if I should buy the bigger tub of ice-cream because I alone couldn't finish it at a go. And even if I did, I may be saying the prayers afterwards to get rid of the sinful felts. With the minis, I get to taste 3 flavours for the price of 1 big tub. And pss...I didn't even hesitate.
My favourite is the chocolate fudge brownie. The chocolate fudge was so rich in chocolate. The brownie added texture to the ice-cream. Each of the mini tub comes with a spoon inside. It is very convenient for people who want to eat Ben & Jerry's ice-cream but the nearest place they could get them are from 7-11 or supermarkets. They do not have to worry about getting a spoon to eat the ice-cream.

125. Gelatissimo

Gelatissimo. An Italian ice-cream. Gelato is the ice-cream that contains relatively a lower percentage of butterfat and this is what attracts the ladies who are ice-cream lovers. I got a medium cup, 2 scoops for $6.90, pretty expensive. They have got a pretty wide range of flavours to choose from. I chose the profiterole and macadamia.
Well, I think the gelato from Gelatissimo is just the same as the other gelato brands. Not much of a difference. The only difference may be the choice of flavours available. I saw that they offered sorbet and also unique flavours like red bull.

96. Macau - Kyushu Ice-Cream

* This was taken in Macau during 21-25 Feb 2008.

You don't have to travel to Japan to taste Kyushu's ice-cream. There is this small stall at the end of the stretch of shops from Senado Square. It was in a alley directly opposite to a post office. Sorry, didn't take note of the address. When we were at this stall, a few Japanese businessmen were brought there by a local to buy the ice-cream. Haha. The ice-cream was good. I had the chesnut flavour one but I tried the other two. The strawberry one wasn't too much different from the normal strawberry flavoured ones. The matcha one had azuki red beans in it. The chestnut one had bits of chestnut in it. I think the chestnut tasted the best. There were many other flavours.

It cost MOP13 (SGD3.25) per cup.

82. New Zealand Natural

New Zealand Natural, another upcoming mega chain monster. Ever since gelato with their low-fat ice-cream stormed into Singapore, it has been a favourite among many of us, especially the ladies. Frankly speaking, sometimes I wonder isn't this self-deception? It will still make one fat. Haha. Anyway, I tried out this premium ice-cream. They didn't say it's low-fat. They emphasize more on 'Natural'. But on their website, they said their ice-cream is 97% fat-free!

A look at the choices available. A lot were made from fruits. Chocolate-flavoured ones are never missed on the list. Fattening, sinful yet still so favourable.

1 scoop @$3.90

The kiwifruit pavola caught my eyes. It was pretty special. I have never tried kiwi flavoured ice-cream before. It seemed that more and more ice-cream makers are bringing in the kiwi ice-cream. I saw the new kiwi flavoured ice-cream from kings at the supermarket a week ago and was tempted to buy but didn't.

The ice-cream was full-flavoured, just like a high body cup of coffee. It had bits in it. No idea what it was but it tasted like milk bits. I felt too much of it will make one grow sick of it even though it was ice-cream made from a fruit. Just like eating carbonara. The first few mouthfuls were always so rich and delicious.

27. A Daily Scoop

Famous for its durian ice-cream. Many flavours available too, even with weird flavours like wasabe mango. Pretty expensive. 2 scoops and a waffle cost $8.30.
